What is RIRS?

Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS) is a minimally invasive procedure to remove kidney or ureter stones using a flexible ureteroscope inserted through the urinary tract. Stones are visualized and broken using laser lithotripsy, and fragments are removed naturally or with special baskets.

RIRS is ideal for small to medium-sized stones, complex stone locations, or stones not treatable by ESWL.

RIRS Treatment Procedure

1. Minimally Invasive Surgery

Performed under general or spinal anesthesia
Flexible ureteroscope inserted through the urethra and bladder into the kidney
Stones fragmented using laser lithotripsy
Stone fragments removed with baskets or allowed to pass naturally
Duration: 60–120 minutes depending on stone size and number

2. Post-Procedure Care

Temporary stent may be placed to aid urine flow
Pain medications as required
Drink plenty of water to flush fragments
Avoid strenuous activity for 1–2 weeks
